Lake Whatcom Living A Closer Look Into Sudden Valley Washington by Eric Badgely
City life can feel a bit overwhelming, even in a city thatâs as small as Bellingham. The hectic lifestyle of the downtown area can sometimes make you long for a home thatâs a bit more separate from all of the noisy hustle-and-bustle, but still close enough for easy access to all the positive aspects of downtown life.
If this sounds familiar, life in the around Lake Whatcom in The Sudden Valley neighborhood may be just the quiet alternative that youâre looking for. First developed from its simple farm roots in the 1970s, and located just five miles outside the Bellingham City limits, this exquisite private community is equipped with all the amenities one could ask for. Sudden Valley is situated the length of Lake Whatcomâs western shore, and boasts an array of lush forestry, making you feel enveloped by the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Although often treated as a part of the greater Bellingham limits, this community of just over 4,000 acts as its own entity in many ways, with a private community association that controls much of the neighborhoodâs services. The Sudden Valley Community Association, as it is known, is in charge of maintaining their recreational center, outdoor swimming pool, golf course, and local theatre.
Taking a closer look at some of these facilities and services, one can see just why the neighborhood attracts both couples and families looking to escape city life, and those just looking for a summer home. The Barn Theatre, founded in 1996 by Dr. Ellen and Dwight Kester, as well as Gail and Gary Gallant, is an educational community theatre with an exceptional season of shows. Past performances include Charlie Brown, Oliver, Brigadoon, and Camelot. Itâs most popular showcase is its Summer Drama Program, which will next premier in July of 2011.
Designed by distinguished architect Ted Robinson, the Sudden Valley Golf and Country Club possesses an 18-hole championship course and a âfour-starâ rating by Golf Digest Magazine. It enjoys both a Pro Shop, (with the very latest in cutting-edge golf technology), and its very own Bobâs Burgers and Brews â a Bellingham staple. It also hosts a number of events during the year, including the upcoming âCha-Cha-Chaâ 4-person, shotgun tournament.
For those not interested in Golf or Theater, Sudden Valley still has an excellent assortment of activities to enjoy. Every July the Annual Sudden Valley Flea Market invites residents and nonresidents alike to bring items to sell. Itâs a great opportunity to feel part of the community! The neighborhood contains only one strip mall, containing just a video store, gas station, convenience store, post office, and the famous Tinoâs Pizza and Pasta Company, where resident gather to enjoy Tinoâs delicious treats, including their âspecialâ pizza: Canadian Bacon, pepperoni, sausage, olives, mushrooms, green peppers, onion and extra cheese!
With all this and more to offer, itâs easy to see why the Sudden Valley neighborhood has become so up-and-coming.
